Early American Poetry and Short Stories: A 6-session workshop that focuses on American authors from the early-mid 19th century. Weekly webinars are 50 minutes long.  Recordings are available for students who must miss a session.

Readings include:

  • Washington Irving’s “Rip Van Winkle”
  • Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart”
  • Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven”
  • Emerson and Thoreau’s Transcendentalist poetry
  • Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “Paul Revere’s Ride” and “The Village Blacksmith”
  • William Cullen Bryant’s “The Poet” and “To a Waterfowl”

All readings are provided online for students enrolled in the class.

Challenge Level

This is an all-ages workshop. Any students who feel prepared to read and discuss the assigned poetry and short stories are welcome to attend.

Time Commitment

Most students report spending approximately 1-2 hours per week on homework outside of the webinar.
