Revamping Our Writing Program

 In Courses, Recent Articles, Blog

We are taking a new direction in how we teach writing to gifted students here at G3! As technology continues to advance, so do the ways students learn and engage with educational opportunities. That’s why we are creating an innovative online writing program designed to evolve with the times. Our new program has been carefully crafted with a singular aim in mind: to equip students with the skills they need to excel in college and beyond.

A Reason to Write!

In each class, students will be given writing assignments that have real-world relevance and are connected to the themes they are studying. We will emphasize the importance of understanding and writing for authentic audiences beyond the teacher. This may include publishing their work online or in print, participating in writing contests, or simply sharing practical writing with family and friends. Writing for authentic audiences helps students develop their confidence and communication skills, as well as their ability to connect with others through their writing.

Future-Proof Writing

Our new classes focus on preparing students for the types of writing they will encounter in college and in life. This includes revising their own work and giving feedback on their classmates’ writing. In some classes, we may also introduce students to the editing and revising of writing produced by AI, as this is a skill that may become increasingly relevant in their future careers. By practicing these skills, students learn how to be critical readers and writers, as they develop the skills needed to communicate successfully in our ever-evolving society.

Efficient Vocabulary Study

Vocabulary choice is an important aspect of writing, and our new classes incorporate word roots that are connected to the themes of each class. By learning word roots, students can expand their vocabulary quickly and better understand the nuances of language to become more effective communicators and writers.

Meaningful Grammar

These new classes connect grammar knowledge to real-world written use. Students will learn how to use grammar in a way that is relevant to their writing and their lives. This helps to make grammar less abstract and more accessible, and it can lead to more effective writing.

Style vs. Accuracy

Students will study grammar for style rather than just accuracy. While accuracy is important, it is likely that in the future, AI will be able to resolve most grammatical errors. However, style is something that is uniquely human, and it can have a significant impact on the effectiveness of written communication. By focusing on style, this program helps students to develop their own unique voices as writers.

Writing with Technology

In today’s world, technology plays an increasingly important role in communication. We will harness the power of technology to study and create written work. With access to a wealth of online resources, students can develop their writing skills in a dynamic and interactive environment. Some classes will also study the possibilities of writing with AI technology, such as ChatGPT. By combining the best of both traditional and modern educational practices, we hope to offer a truly comprehensive approach to writing education.

Write On!

With a focus on real-world writing experiences, authentic audiences, and meaningful revision, students can develop a deeper understanding of effective written communication that will serve them well for decades. We hope you will join us on this journey!
