The communities, cities, and natural systems that are linked by America’s 2,400 mile Interstate 10 highway are currently confronted with some of the biggest sustainability problems that will eventually affect the entire country. Connecting the fastest growing, most demographically diverse, and most disaster-vulnerable U.S. cities from Los Angeles to Jacksonville, the I-10 provides a living observatory for exploring modern problems like climate change and social inequity while envisioning more sustainable and inclusive futures.
Students will:
- Learn about resilience and sustainability planning in modern resource systems that support daily life, such as water, food, energy, and commercial supply chains
- Explore American geography and the connections between social equity and resilience across the diverse cultural communities of the southern U.S.
- Analyze real-world resource systems, resilience problems, and possible solutions affecting local communities across the country, using concepts from multiple academic fields
- Relate historical development, cultural diversity, and associated social equity issues to contemporary problems and solutions
- Develop media literacy by conducting basic research required in a collegiate setting
- Identify the specific college course offerings, degree tracks, and career paths for each student’s individual interests and goals

ASU Credit
Student progress is closely monitored by G3 staff to help students achieve success in each course. However, at the end of the course, the student has the option to decide whether or not to place the course on an official ASU transcript for college credit. This allows the student to earn high school credit and attempt college credit without fear of failure! Students can choose to drop or audit the ASU course at any time. If the student chooses to finish the course and place the credits on an official ASU transcript, an additional $400 fee (set by ASU and payable directly to ASU) will apply.
