This introductory composition course will help you develop the skills and processes essential to navigate the various writing situations you are bound to encounter in your academic, professional, and personal life. During the course, you will draft and revise three major projects, complete various writing activities, discuss and reflect on your development as a writer, and learn to leverage emerging technologies to get the work of writing done.

This introductory composition course will help you develop the skills and processes essential to navigate the various writing situations you are bound to encounter in your academic, professional, and personal life. During the course, you will draft and revise three major projects, complete various writing activities, discuss and reflect on your development as a writer, and learn to leverage emerging technologies to get the work of writing done.

Students will:

  • Define an argumentative purpose that addresses a specific issue or phenomenon
  • Adopt an open stance toward competing perspectives when addressing an issue or phenomenon
  • Learn, implement, and evaluate rhetorical concepts to appeal to audience expectations
  • Utilize writing technologies that are best suited for specific writing situations and genres
  • Implement the fundamental components of effective writing practices such as invention, drafting, collaboration, revision, and reflection
  • Utilize flexibility during the drafting, revision, and reflection processes

This is an intensive 13-week college class for teens who have already excelled in advanced high school classes. Strong writing skills are required. Weekly webinars with a G3 instructor are 50 minutes long. Recordings are available for students who must miss a session.

Required books:

  • All resources are provided online in the ASU classroom at no additional cost.

Exams and grading

  • Writing Projects – 60%
  • Invention Activities – 15%
  • Drafting Activities – 15%
  • Reflection Activities – 5%
  • Quizzes/Knowledge Checks – 5%

The G3 instructor controls the pacing of this course. All assignments must be submitted by the deadlines provided by Online G3. Exceptions may be requested in unusual circumstances. Without exception, all assignments must be submitted to ASU within 365 days of initial enrollment.

ASU Credit

Student progress is closely monitored by G3 staff to help students achieve success in each course. However, at the end of the course, the student has the option to decide whether or not to place the course on an official ASU transcript for college credit. This allows the student to earn high school credit and attempt college credit without fear of failure! Students can choose to drop or audit the ASU course at any time. If the student chooses to finish the course and place the credits on an official ASU transcript, an additional $400 fee (set by ASU and payable directly to ASU) will apply.

Challenge Level

Aimed at students who have already excelled in advanced high school courses. This is an intensive freshman-level university course open to students ages 12 and up who are prepared to consider and discuss challenging concepts at the college level. Students will be required to read college textbook material.

Time Commitment

ASU estimates that students will spend approximately 9-12 hours/week on this 3-credit university course.

Prerequisites

Previous success in G3 Teen Focus courses or equivalent.

Students must be prepared to read, view, and analyze challenging material at a university level. Students must also be able to write multi-paragraph texts independently and participate actively in written discussion forums and in the live webinar. Knowledge of basic Excel functionality will be very helpful in setting you up for success in this course.
